“S:t Thomas Samarit förening” through its project “Flyktingar Lund” is organizing a big collection of second-hand winter clothing for outdoors that will be send to Lesvos in collaboration with We Act, Human Bridge and Caritas Sverige. Second-hand donations will be delivered to several organizations based in Greece including organizations in Lesvos. Flyktingar Lund’s collection will be carried out during week 45, starting on Monday 4th of November and finishing on Sunday 10th of November.
What are we collecting?
Our collection focuses on outdoor winter jackets, shoes, boots, scarves, winter hats and sleeping bags for winter. We kindly ask you to deliver all donations clean and in good condition.
Why do we do this collection?
Four years ago, the influx of refugees into Europe fleeing from war and terrorism reached its peak during Autumn. Four years ago, “S:t Thomas katolska församling” started the project “Flyktingar Lund”, collected around 5 287 winter jackets and 652 pairs of shoes that were sent to asylum-seekers arriving to Southern Europe.
Nowadays in 2019, around 1 000 asylum-seekers arrive to the shore of Lesvos in Greece every week. One of the camps where people arrive in Lesvos, called Moria, is designed for about 3 000 asylum-seekers but there live more than 13 000 people, from which more than 4 000 are children. There is an ongoing humanitarian emergency situation in Lesvos especially for children that is no longer broadcasted on the Swedish TV.
In September this year, during the 105th commemoration of the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, Pope Francis’s message was that “we cannot remain insensitive before the misery of so many innocent people. We must not fail to weep. We must not fail to respond”. The situation of asylum-seekers in Moria, especially for the ones who are living in tents, will become even more acute because of the coming winter.
We appeal to your solidarity through this collection, let’s join forces for asylum-seekers in Lesvos!
